The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) safety report of 2021 recorded 10611 fatal road accidents. Then in 2022 the ongoing spate of truck accidents prompted RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane to remind all commercial vehicle operators of the National Traffic Act, which essentially states that commercial vehicle operators are held responsible for their drivers. The Valecus wearable device monitors driver health parameters in real-time and allows decision-makers to take appropriate action before an adverse event occurs. This device is designed to be comfortably worn by a driver with no imposition on their work duties. The parameters measured are: heart rate, blood pressure, glucose, body temperature and oxygen saturation. The parameters are measured in set intervals chosen by the personnel responsible for the driver. The results are made available in real-time on either the Valecus platform or on a mobile app. Responsible personnel are additionally notified via alerts and notifications should a driver’s parameters be deteriorating.

  • ·         Adheres to the POPI act so that employee personal data is not shared with unauthorized individuals (note that this is not a medical device.)

  • ·         The battery life is suitable for long trips (estimated 30 hours if reading parameters at 2 minute intervals)
  • ·         The wearable device is water and dust proof to norm standards
  • ·         Has been tested to work for at least 30 minutes under 15cm – 1m of water
